Seminar announcement WS 25/26
The department is offering a seminar on climate economics in the coming winter semester.
Dear students of the TU Clausthal,
We are pleased to offer the seminar "Climate Economics" in the coming semester. In times of growing public attention and increasing awareness of ecological challenges, the problem of man-made environmental damage and its foreseeable consequences has moved into the consciousness of the general public. Clear calls for immediate action have been made at various international conferences and by numerous scientists and activists.
However, topics related to combating environmental damage have been central to environmental economics for decades. Since 1912, in the tradition of Arthur Pigou, environmental damage has been understood in standard theory as negative external effects that are associated with welfare losses, but whose avoidance also causes costs. Stern (2007) even described environmental problems as the "greatest market failure the world has ever seen". It is therefore the task of the state to persuade those responsible for environmental damage to behave in an environmentally friendly manner through sanctions and incentive mechanisms.
But what specific challenges do environmental economics and environmental policy face as a result of the climate problem? How should risk and time discounting be dealt with? Which climate policy instruments can be considered? How can the necessary cooperation between different actors be ensured to tackle the climate problem? These and other questions will be explored, critically scrutinized and discussed in the seminar on the basis of current, relevant scientific literature.
This seminar is aimed in particular at those interested in and attending the Environmental Economics lecture offered in the summer semester. Participation in this course is not a prerequisite for admission to the seminar, but it is recommended (especially for Bachelor students) to have previously dealt with the material and literature of the lecture.
Kind regards,
