A word from the institute management
Prof. Fabian Paetzel on the founding of the Institute of Management, Economics and Law (IMEL) on January 1, 2026
On January 1, 2026, the Institute of Management, Economics and Law (IMEL) will be established as a new institute at Clausthal University of Technology. By merging the Institute of Economics and the Institute of German and International Mining and Energy Law (IBER), we are jointly opening a new chapter in the development of economics and law at our location.
This decision is the result of a lengthy joint process and an expression of the conviction that the major transformation tasks of our time can only be successfully tackled on an interdisciplinary basis. The circular economy forms the thematic umbrella of our work. The transformation of energy and raw material systems requires not only technological innovations, but also viable economic concepts and a market-based and reliable legal framework. This is precisely where IMEL comes in with its broad range of research instruments.
The new institute combines expertise in the fields of management, economics and law, thus creating a close link between business, economic and legal perspectives combined with a multifaceted variety of methods. Our aim is to develop well-founded analyses, evidence-based contributions and practical solutions for a sustainable, competitive and socially acceptable transformation.
For students, researchers and cooperation partners, IMEL means continuity in quality and commitment - but also new opportunities for collaboration, profile building and international visibility. Within TU Clausthal, we see ourselves as an active team player at the interface of business, law, technology and sustainability.
I look forward to shaping this path together with my colleagues at IMEL as well as with our students and partners from science, business, politics and society.
In view of the imminent launch of IMEL on January 1, 2026, I am looking forward to working together in the new institute.
