International Workshop on Behavioral Economics

The Institute of Economics at Clausthal University of Technology organized a workshop on this topic for the first time. 22 researchers exchanged ideas on experimental and behavioral economics.

Clausthal professors Fabian Paetzel (Department of Economics) and Roland Menges (Department of Economics, in particular Macroeconomics) hosted the two-day event in the Aula Academica under the motto "Harzreise im Sommer". Among the guests were researchers and doctoral students from Germany, Denmark and Switzerland.

The extensive program included bilingual workshops and lectures on a total of seven general topics. Among others, Prof. Andreas Nicklisch (University of Applied Sciences Graubünden) reported on "Socio-economic values of Syrian refugees" in the topic area "Ethnicity". For the project, his research group analyzed the conflict experiences of refugees in Jordanian refugee camps.

Christoph Bühren (Ruhr University Bochum) recognized the ghost games in the German Bundesliga caused by the coronavirus pandemic as a natural field experiment. In the "Sports and Environmental Economics" section, he presented the resulting effects on the performance of the home and visiting teams. On the same topic, Prof. Menges presented his work on the willingness to contribute to public goods in the context of the circular economy.

Prof. Paetzel spoke to the plenum on the topic of "Identity" about the results of an experiment conducted with soldiers in relation to social identity and status. The participants also discussed various opportunities for cooperation between the economics department at Clausthal University of Technology and the other institutions. Initial ideas for research collaborations or joint projects such as a joint graduate school emerged.

A varied supporting program gave the guests the opportunity to get to know the Harz Mountains and Clausthal-Zellerfeld a little better. In addition to a hike to the Spiegeltal waterfall, the group visited the Upper Harz mountain farmers' market. A get-together the evening before the workshop in the "Biermünze" and a conference dinner in the "Glück Auf" restaurant rounded off the event.

After a successful start, the organizers would like to hold a behavioural economics workshop again next year. In the long term, the event should become an annual event.
